Title: Summit to Streambed to Stomach: An Overview of Microplastics in our Environment
Speakers:
Austin Baldwin -, Hydrologist, US Geological Survey
Microplastics are being found virtually everywhere we look, from alpine snowpack to the stomachs of aquatic organisms. This presentation will provide an overview of microplastic sources, occurrence in different environmental compartments, and potential effects on aquatic organisms.
Monica Hubbard - Assistant Professor, Department of Public Policy & Administration
Contaminants of emerging concern create water quality issues throughout the United States, and as such, lead to uncertainty for managers and policy makers alike. While CECs are not yet regulated on the federal level, some innovative sub-national governments have tried to mitigate the impacts of CEC's. The success of these policies vary, often due to conflicting federal regulations and politics. One such example is the state and local governments attempt to prevent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from entering the water system. This talk will review some past and current efforts to mitigate APIs, and the politics surrounding them.
