Geoscience Department Seminar: Quantifying the role that terrestrial ecosystems play in Earth's climate
Speaker: Dr. Abigail Swann.
Time: 3:00pm, preceded at 2:30pm by cookies and coffee in the lobby of the Environmental Research Building.
Location: Engineering Building, room 103,
Abstract: Biologists have widely documented how the local environment influences plants. Recent findings suggest, surprisingly, that the reverse is also true: plant distribution and functioning control the local energy balance at Earth’s surface and directly modify regional and global scale climate. In this talk I will discuss how plants modify the climate system and its response to external forcing. We will investigate the sensitivity of the atmosphere to changes in plant cover, in particular the location of plant cover change. We will also explore the role that plant responses to a changing climate can further modify climate. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that ecosystems and climate must be considered together as a coupled system, particularly when assessing the response of the climate system to change.
Dr. Swann holds joint appointments in the Departments of Atmospheric Science and Biology at the University of Washington. She received the PhD degree in Atmospheric Science from UC Berkeley in 2010, was awarded an NSF CAREER award in 2016, and was just named an Early Career Fellow by the Ecological Society of America earlier this month.

Meet at Heron Park in Garden City (3858 Reed St, Garden City; off of Adams St)
The City of Boise owns and operates a 48-inch sanitary sewer interceptor under the Greenbelt along the west (Garden City) bank of the Boise River. Prior to construction of this bank stabilization project, segments of the pavement and shoulder of the Greenbelt were failing, and the river bank vegetation consisted of invasive black locust and false indigo (and broken concrete riprap) as well as some native cottonwood and willow. To protect the integrity of the sewer interceptor and Greenbelt and improve existing riparian conditions, the City hired Jacobs to develop a design, support permitting, and observe construction of the project using a method incorporating fabric-encapsulated soil lifts (FESL) and native willow cuttings. Constructed from January to March 2019 (timed in coordination with Garden City’s improvements to Heron Park), the project performed well during spring high flows, and the vegetation is establishing. Please join us at the project site to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the design, construction, and maintenance associated with this approach to river bank stabilization.
